August, 2008

It is already August, and here at LitLife, there have been lots of wonderful summer happenings:

You’ve probably already noticed that we have two new booksellers, Jennifer Sorensen and Regina Gort.  Both women are passionate about reading, writing, and the world of books, as well as about the future of this little bookstore.  One of Jenn’s interests is history, so you can look forward to seeing an expansion of our History section and some future events based on the subject.  Currently, she’s working on displays and events to coordinate with Banned Books Week (September 27 – October 4, 2008).  Gina loves literature for children and young adults.  She has created a new monthly feature called First Saturday for Kids at LitLife, and has lots of great ideas about upcoming events for our younger readers.  If you haven’t yet had a chance to meet Jenn or Gina, stop by the store soon to say hi.

We’ve hosted our first evening of music and poetry with great success.  Jenn has written about the event in a previous blog so I won’t go into detail here, but we now know that our store has stellar acoustics and attracts a great audience.  Look for more reading events in the near future.

LitLife now features a Book-of-the-Month Selection.  With amazing works of literature being published regularly, we hope to expose our customers to a great new read every month (and as a confirmation of our enthusiasm for the book, we’ll offer the selection at 20% off!).  Our début selection for July was The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wrobeleski.  This is an absolutely wonderful book that shouldn’t (and, quite frankly, can’t) be ignored.  For our August selection, we’re featuring Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer.  If you haven’t started Meyer’s Twilight Saga yet, now is the time – this series is a favorite among young adults and older readers alike, and we’ve all been impatiently awaiting the final book, Breaking Dawn, just released on August 2nd.  Besides, what’s not to love about books involving teen romance and vampires?

The Writer’s Group at LitLife will be starting in September.  Held once a month in the store after-hours (we’re aiming at every 3rd Tuesday), we hope the group will attract a core membership who is passionate about writing and the shared creative process.  Each member should bring something to read (6 pages at most), a pencil, and a desire to offer constructive feedback to fellow group members.  Please let us know if you’d like to join the group!

And, finally, we are working on an amazing schedule of new offerings for our customers.  A few of the upcoming events include:

First Saturday for Kids Events:
The English Roses Tea Party
August 2, 2008, 11a-12noon

Book Signing with Susan Colins Thoms, author of Cesar Takes A Break
September 6, 2008, 11a-12noon

Halloween Party for Kids
Saturday, October 25, 2008, 11a-12noon

Also in the works:  an evening of poetry with Heather Sellers, a one-year anniversary celebration (hopefully in conjunction with our neighbors at Kitchen Design Studio and Wealthy at Charles), an author signing with Deborah Diesen (author of The Pout-Pout Fish), and more.

As always, please let us know if there are books, events, or concerns you’d like to discuss with us.  And remember:  Read.  Write.  Live.
