Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week is here!  Starting September 27 and going through October 4, Banned Books Week, according to the American Library Association, “celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.”

It surprised me to see the variety of books that have been challenged or banned in the past (and still today)!  Come in and see our display and show your support for intellectual freedom by reading a banned book!

September 2, 2008

This has been a magnificent Summer!  Our flowers are still fresh and blooming; I water them every day.  flowers I wave across the street to Anthony and the guys at Ron’s Hand Car Wash; they always wave back, no matter how busy they are (and they’ve been busy this summer).  Wealthy At Charles is re-doing their interior - I can’t wait to see how beautiful it will be when they’re finished.  All kinds of things are happening on Wealthy Street!  More and more people are exploring Wealthy Street and discovering us!  I just love when someone visits us for the first time and says how nice the store is and how many great stores there are on Wealthy Street.  There are more to come, too, so be sure to come on over and have a walk-about!

Summer is almost over, though it doesn’t feel almost over today; it’s 91F outside!  We’ve got events coming up, so don’t forget to check our “News and Events” section. http://www.literarylifebookstore.com/news/ This Saturday is our September First Saturday for Kids event.  Susan Thoms will read Cesar Takes a Break and sign your copy if you’d like - it should be fun!  I missed the last First Saturday for Kids event so am really looking forward to this one.  I read the book already and was completely charmed by Cesar’s adventures and the vibrant artwork.

In October, we will have a Halloween Party on the 25th, instead of a First Saturday event, because Roni and I are going to the Great Lakes Book Association trade show in Dearborn.  I’m so excited!  My first Book Show!  We have to make room for more books, so for the first time, we have a selection of items priced at half-off their regular price.  There are adorable children’s items, gorgeous amethyst glass vases (complete with exquisite faux blooms), beautiful note cards and more.  We plan on coming home from the Book Show with lots of loot - er, I mean, books, so be sure to come in to see what we find!

My TBR (To Be Read) pile is pretty high, but I’m sure it’ll grow some more.  That’s one of the BEST things about working in a bookstore: reading books I might normally pass by!  And, of course, talking about them with you guys!  I’ve received some great suggestions from our readers, for example, Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, by Atul Gawande.  Ellen suggested I read it, and I did - in one weekend!  It was compelling!  Thanks, Ellen!  I love sharing good books!
